Chapter 15

The other night Atticus left in the dark to go to the courthouse jail. Jem and I were very scared for him. Quietly, Jem, Dill, and I snuck out of the house and rushed to the jail. We were hiding behind the wall while we listened to this group of angry men talk bad to Atticus. I was so mad! I ran out from behind the wall and broke up the fight.

After the group got in their cars and drove away, we made our way home. I asked Atticus why those men were being so mean to him. He said to not mind it. They are just angry. Jem was also confused on why the men were being rude to Atticus.

Chapter 12

My brother Jem has been acting different lately. Usually him and I would always get along, but now it seems like he wants nothing to do with me. He spends a lot of time in his room. He is moody and doesn't want to talk to anyone. I know he is growing up, but I just want him to be nice to me!

Today Jem and I attended church with Calpurnia. It was a lot different than what we had expected. The folks there sang a lot of songs. They were all very nice to us. Jem and I were the only two white people there.

Chapter 8

It hadn't snowed in Maycomb for a very long time. For some odd reason, we received a harsh snowstorm. Atticus let us stay home a day from school because of it! Jem and I took most of the snow from our yard to build a snowman. We made it look like our neighbor Mr. Avery. It was cold in our house, but I enjoyed being snug in bed!

My father woke me up from my deep sleep that snowy night. At first he didn't tell me why, but I had to hurry up and get out of our house. When Jem and I were at our sidewalk, the neighborhood was outside as well. Miss Maudie's house was burning down! I saw some of my neighbors running in and out of the burning house, taking furniture and important things out. I was so tired and I felt really bad for Miss Maudie.

Chapter 6

We made a bad choice to try to go in the Radley's house at night and peek on Boo Radley. Jem, Dill and I sneaked under the fence in their backyard and crept up to the Radley's window. All of a sudden we heard a noise from the side of the house and saw a shadow coming towards us. We were so scared that we ran as fast as we could back to my house. Jem got stuck in the fence from his pants, and he had to take them off in order to get free.

As we were running back home, we heard a very loud gun shot! It came from the Radley house. Soon, the whole neighborhood was out on the street, running towards the Radley's. Mr. Radley came out with his rifle and said a negro was trying to steal his things. I could see that Jem was really scared and didn't want to get caught.

Chapter 4

I usually don't like walking to school, but sometimes it's really interesting. One day I saw something shiny in a knot-hole of a tree. I looked into it and there was a piece of gum! When I told Jem about it, he said to spit the gum out because that tree was by the Radley house. The next day, Jem and I looked into the hole again and found some pennies. Jem doesn't want to take them yet. He thinks someone owns the money and is hiding it there.

Dill, Jem and I were playing outside my house one day. They told me I should put myself in a tire and they would roll me down a hill. When it was happening, it hurt and I wanted it to stop. Soon enough, I felt a hard bump and I fell out of the tire. I looked up, and I was at the porch of the Radley house. Jem was yelling at me to run back. Before I hurried up to get out of the Radley's yard, I heard a laugh coming from the house. It was really scary.

Chapter 3

Since I spoke for Walter, I was on Miss Caroline's bad side. Jem told me to let it go; I'm bigger than he is and he's a nice fellow. Our family knew the Cunningham family. Walter's father was one of Atticus's clients, and we knew that they were good people. Jem invited Walter over for dinner, and he sure was happy to join us! He poured syrup on everything, including his vegetables and meat! I thought it was quiet strange, but Calpurnia told me not to be rude about it.

There is this mean, dirty boy in my class. His name is Burris Ewell. Burris is older than the rest of us. He only comes to school for the first day. The other day Miss Caroline was screaming because she saw his cooties crawling around the classroom. Burris is older than the rest of us. He said hurtful things to Miss Caroline and made her cry.

Chapter 2

Today I finally started school! It definitely wasn't like I thought it would be. I already got in trouble for actually being SMART! My teacher, Miss Caroline, said my father should stop teaching me because he does not know what he is doing. First of all, she doesn't even know my father. Second of all, I am more literate than anyone else in my class. I know the teacher is new to the town of Maycomb, but she doesn't need to feel like she's better than any of us!

There is this boy in my class named Walter Cunningham. The other day in school Miss Caroline told us to take out our lunches and put them on our desk. When Walter didn't take out a lunch, Miss Caroline questioned him about it. When he did not answer, I spoke for him. I told our teacher how he is a Cunningham and they don't have much at all. They do not take money from others if they can't pay them back. At the end of the school day, I told my father and Jem about the situation Walter was in.
